Spotlight | Power Battery Summit Roundtable, EVE proposes two dimensions for new material evaluation

Nov 16,2019

On November 16th, at the 4th International Summit?on Power Battery Application (CBIS2019), Dr. He?Wei, director of EVE’s?Technology Department, was invited to participate in a round table discussion?on “Promoting the New Technology Industry of Battery Materials” together with industry experts and representatives.

The improvement of power battery technology largely determines the development of China's new energy vehicle industry. Many of the improvements in technology come from the development and improvement of materials. The development of new material systems has become the key to the development of power batteries.

EVE is one of the few companies in the lithium battery industry that covers multiple technology roadmaps?such as cylindrical cells, prismatic cells, and pouch cells. And?has layouts in many lithium battery segments. Which new material technology is most promising? What are your views on accelerating the industrialization of new battery materials?

In this regard, Dr. He Wei shared, "From the perspective of industrialization, we believe that there are two dimensions to?evaluate?new materials and new technologies. The first is the maturity of the technology. For example, lithium-sulfur batteries that discussed frequently in previous years,?most of the technical reports study the dissolution mechanism of sulfur electrodes in the cyclic process. When discussing the issue of whether to use soluble or insoluble electrolyte systems, we are studying the technology maturity. The direction is right, but at least from the current point of view, lithium-sulfur batteries do not have the technical maturity so far that this type of technology is still not in the process of industrialization.”

The second is the application value of new materials and technologies. For example, the high-nickel material 811 or NCA used in?E-Bike and power tools?has mass production in industry 10 years ago. But current 811 materials do not completely solve the natural attributes of power battery--safety and high reliability.?So the industrialization progress is relatively slow. We look forward to the gradual and stable implementation of such new material technology to achieve industrialized applications.

In the future, lithium batteries with higher energy density and lower cost will be the core needs of car company customers. For the requirements of mileage below 350 kilometers, EVE is optimistic about the application of?LFP cells?in the short and medium term, and will further match the development of fast charging technology materials. For the mileage demand of more than 500 kilometers, EVE continues to be optimistic about NCM?high energy density materials.

In the field of power batteries, EVE always starts from the core needs of customers, adheres to technological innovation, deeply integrates the needs of the future development path of the power vehicle industry, gains insight into the development status of the power battery industry chain?and accelerates the global automotive electrification process.
